I’m Back!

Back in November I dropped off the edge of the edge of the blogging earth. I just couldn’t keep up with blogging, cleaning, R, and the holidays. Something had to give and blogging was very easy to give up. So I stopped.

At first, I was enjoying my newfound freedom but then I started to miss it. So I posted here and there on social media but overall I was still MIA. By the end of December, I had settled on how to bring together the best of both blogging and not blogging: I’d lose the schedule.

I wanted so terribly to jump out into the blogging world and give it my everything. That’s how I tend to do things: obsess night and day over anything I’m interested in. The opportunity cost of jumping head first into blogging though is just too high for me to be willing to pay for long: my family. I could easily spend upwards of 60-70 hours a week writing, photographing, editing, posting on social media, making new contacts, etc. and not even put a dent in my blogging to-do list. Those 60 hours came from play time, cleaning time, and even my sleeping time. I do not want to be a mother permanently attached to her phone/tablet/computer.

R is already obsessed with electronics. If she can get ahold of a cell phone, a computer, the remote, or a tablet, she seizes the opportunity with lightning speed. The last thing I want to do as her mother is solidify the idea that we should be attached to an electronic device 24/7. I want to be back to a point where I turn on Pandora and my phone sits on a charger all day while we sing, dance, play, read, sleep, and explore.

My new plan: post on social media when I feel like it and attempt to have a new post up at least once a month. Basically, this is getting downgraded from a non-paying job to a hobby. I also think I’m going to start having some more journal type posts mixed in with my informative ones.

Some topics I hope to be covering soon include: cloth diapering, a breastfeeding schedule, weaning, cleaning tips, recipes, and a couple holiday themed posts.  What would you like to see?

I look forward to restarting this blogging adventure with you in this new year. Happy 2017! May we all learn and grow and become better versions of ourselves this year.

What I Did During My Time Off…

As you know, I took a hiatus for the past week. It was a wonderful week of doing whatever I wanted without worrying about social media, blogging, followers, likes, views, blah, blah, blah. But starting next week I will be back with new content and an improved attitude! So what did R and I do while we were AFK? (For those of you that don’t know that one it means away from keyboard… got that from my husband’s gamer days. haha!)

After story time at the library, we stopped to see great grandma and (after this nap) she took us out to eat!

We (finally) took 8 month photos!

We entered the Gerber Photo Contest with this picture (and later this month I will shamelessly be begging for your vote because the money would be an amazing start to her college fund and because I truly think she is a Gerber Baby).

I took out the last of the baby gear from her room (jumperoo) and started working on a rail cover for her crib (oh, and that first top tooth finally poked through).

We played (and ate… and slept) at grandma’s house… she also was gifted grandpa’s old iPod touch for her “phone” because she is constantly trying to steal cell phones!

We played outside and found a yellow leaf from the tulip tree.

We watched daddy fly his drone.

We learned to play peek-a-boo. (There’s no sound because I can’t stand the sound of my voice on film, anyone else feel that way or is it just me?)

I got a t-shirt to promote my blog. (If I were selling them would anyone be interested? Considering doing so once I purchase a domain name…)

I washed ALL the toys, the toy bin, and deep cleaned the house (because it ALWAYS needs to be cleaned).

We attempted painting in a ziplock bag… it was semi-successful.

We played with bubbles when it was nice and warm out!

Tried out her new wheels… She couldn’t reach the floor yet but loved when mommy pushed her!

We took a hayride and picked out a pumpkin at the pumpkin patch.

Took a family trip to the Cincinnati Zoo with my mom & brother, his girlfriend, and her little boy.

R got her first pair of real shoes.

And, finally, we played in the new tunnel!

Also, I caught up on laundry & washed more cloth diapers than I care to say, we read books, sang songs, cuddled lots, watched Hap Palmer and Veggietales videos on YouTube, played with the dogs & the cats, and lots of other things!

I am looking forward to my new blog post next week and am hoping the measures I’m planning to take to lighten my load  (including one post per week) will give me more time to be a wife and mother without compromising the quality of my blogging and social media.

A Reflection of My First Month Blogging

A Reflection of My First Month Blogging | The Hart of it All
Wow! It’s only been one month of blogging! I’ve really been enjoying my time blogging and connecting with everyone via social media. I don’t plan on making a monthly reflection a thing but I just wanted to take a moment at this milestone and share my thoughts with everyone.

First, I’m happy to find that the responses to my blog are positive. I’ve had wonderful comments from people I’ve never met and have gotten more social media followers because of my content.

Second, I’ve found that social media is exhausting. I’m not going to lie, my pre-blogging life I mostly scrolled aimlessly through Facebook to see what kind of drama was happening in my limited social circle and used Twitter to enter contests. That took me all of fifteen to thirty minutes a day. Now I find that I could easily spend all day attached to my phone and a computer and still not feel caught up with my social media feeds.

Another reason why I find social media exhausting is because I strive to post unique content on all my accounts. I try not to post everything on all my accounts because if you follow me on multiple accounts I feel like you should be rewarded with unique content. I am thankful I decided to only start with a few social media accounts (although I’ve already secured accounts with other social media networks). I have also found out how difficult it is to get likes on Facebook! I hardly have any followers on there and rarely have any interaction but I seem to get a lot of blog traffic from Facebook so I won’t complain!

Third, I have on more than one occasion exceeded my “two posts a week” goal. I do not plan to make that a habit. I firmly believe in family first and two posts a week gives me plenty of family time.

Finally, I have not even begun to scratch the surface of topics I want to cover. There are times when I have so many things I want to share I feel overwhelmed with what to share next. I’ve yet to talk about car seats, breastfeeding, cloth diapers, thrifty shopping, books, or recipes.

It is very exciting to find that in the large world of mommy blogs there just might be a place for me. I’m so grateful for all my social media followers and for every view & comment I get on my blog. I can honestly say it always makes my day to see one more blog view, a new follower, a retweet, or a like.

He’s thrilled, as always!

If you’ve been with me from the beginning, you know I started this blog at the urging of my husband. I think he thought I would get all my talking out on my blog and leave him alone but instead I’ve just switched topics to blogging and social media!

I can’t wait to see where this blog takes me and I hope you will stick around for the journey!

Welcome to The Hart of it All

I’ve always been a quiet person. I tend to keep things to myself even around the people I consider close. The only people that get to hear all that’s on my mind is my mother and my husband. Neither of them are generally thrilled when I rant for an hour about car seat safety. The idea of blogging was probably one of the furthest things from my mind until I started wanting to tell people things. I hate confrontation so attempting to tell anyone that there is a better way to do what they are doing is terrifying because I might offend them. Suddenly the idea that I could express my views in a place where my friend won’t hang up the phone and not talk to me for days or even years was quite appealing! So I started writing posts just for myself whenever inspiration hit. Of course no one was reading these posts so the world continued to not listen to quiet little Michelle.

Michelle Hart and husband
Once my daughter was born (I will refer to her as R here) I became a stay-at-home mom. I had more things to say and only my husband and my mom to listen. My husband is a very patient man but eventually listening to me drone on and on about subjects he cares little about started to drive him nuts. He finally suggested I start a blog and then I confided in him that I had already been writing a bunch of posts.

For a while that’s all that became of that idea, just a dream that I shared with my husband. Then I had one of those crazy nights, you know the kind where you have to get up early the next day but you stay up until 3 am. I stayed up nearly all night reading about how to start a blog and how to make it successful. I did not want to jump into this endeavor willy nilly and nothing come of it. I want to be able to help people through things I know about.

So after a month of researching, creating a blog plan (including evaluating other blogs that I aspire to be like), working to come up with a name and a logo, brainstorming posts, and finally setting up accounts, here I am: The Hart of it All.

Let me give you a little background on my name (you can read more about my background on my about me page). I married Mr. Hart in 2012 and I love my new last name. I feel like Hart describes me because I tend to do things with guidance from my heart (thankfully my husband is guided more by his mind so we balance each other out). When I decided to create a blog I knew Hart had to be the main component of the name. I played with words until I came to “The Hart of it All.” It was perfect because to me family is the heart of it all and that’s what my blog is pretty much about. I kept thinking that phrases sounded so familiar. I had to google it and then as the chorus of angels sang I realized it used to be the motto of my home state: Ohio. Only fate could tie my blog name into such a neat little package.

And that leads me to right now. Sitting on my bed while R is napping, ignoring the dishes in the sink to tell you who I am and hope that you will come with me on my journey. I’m excited to share my life with you so let’s get started!
Love,

Michelle Hart
